Alex Newberry is the Head of Research Involvement, Governance & Data for Research at the Welsh Government, with more than 18 years of experience in the government's research and development policy team. He specialises in research governance, ethics, data-led research, and public engagement, and has played a central role in shaping policies that safeguard ethical standards while enabling impactful health and social care research in Wales.

Alex has been instrumental in advancing the use of trusted research environments and data governance frameworks that ensure both public trust and system-wide innovation. He works closely with academic, clinical, and policy partners to translate data-driven insights into improved care and sustainable health systems. Passionate about embedding public involvement at every stage, Alex champions research that delivers tangible benefits for communities in Wales and beyond.
