Reader in Psychiatric Genetics | Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics, Cardiff University
Dr Antonio Pardiñas is a Reader in Psychiatric Genetics at Cardiff University. Originally a biologist specialised in population genetics, his work currently focuses on severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, trying to identify whether genetic variants may act as risk factors for the onset of these disorders or for poor treatment outcomes. A particular interest of his research in why nearly 50% of people with schizophrenia do not respond to a first-line antipsychotic drug, and whether pharmacogenomic interventions could help to improve this figure.
Antonio is currently co-investigator in large-scale projects funded by the EU and UKRI, including the Brain & Genomics Hub of the Mental Health Platform, based in Wales and South-West England. More broadly, Antonio works with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in the deployment of the CRIS (Clinical Record Interactive Search) system for electronic health records, and represents Wales' National Centre for Mental Health at NIHR's Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration. Antonio is also a member and has contributed to landmark publications by the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, an international initiative of 500+ research groups working on the biological basis of mental health.
