Professor of Population Data Science Research, Swansea University, SAIL Databank.
Ashley Akbari is Professor of Population Data Science Research at Swansea University, where he has been based since 2008. He plays a leading role in major research programmes utilising population-scale data, most notably through the SAIL Databank. Ashley is Head of SAIL User and Data Support Services (UDSS) & Research Innovation - SAIL Databank.
A champion of Team Science, Ashley works across disciplines and organisations — from NHS, social care, and public health to academia, government, and charities — to ensure that research outcomes translate into policy and practice. His expertise spans population health, epidemiology, data linkage, and trusted research environments (TREs), with a strong focus on building the next generation of data scientists, and he is Director of the Population Data Science Internship Programme.
Ashley's research interests include using routinely collected health and social data to address policy-relevant questions and improve services and outcomes for people in Wales, the UK, and internationally.
