Professor of Civil Law, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU); Bioethics and Health-Law Expert

Professor Itziar Alkorta Idiakez is Professor of Civil Law at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and a recognised specialist in bioethics, health law and the regulation of emerging technologies. Her research focuses on assisted reproduction and reproductive rights, personalised medicine, tissue donation, health-data protection, research involving sensitive data, and artificial intelligence in medical devices.

She holds a PhD in Law, awarded for a dissertation on the legal regulation of assisted reproduction, and has published five monographs and more than 50 peer-reviewed articles. Her research and policy work includes participation in European projects on biotechnology, data governance and digital health, including SMART-BEAR, PANELFIT, OPEN DEI, PropEUR and NEWR.

Professor Alkorta has been a visiting scholar at The Hastings Centre for Bioethics in New York, the Centre for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Bordeaux. She previously served as UPV/EHU Vice-Rector for Quality and Teaching Innovation and as Deputy Minister for Universities and Research in the Basque Government
